Here you will find a conglomeration of information on my professional identity, academic career, and development as a counselor educator.

The academic page includes a variety of work developed throughout my academic career. This page provides academic creations and scholarly papers. It also includes personal creations of group therapy curriculums for Community Empowerment.  

The counselor education page incorporates student quotes, supervisor evaluations, and powerpoints from my teaching experience. This page also holds my teaching philosophy and created syllabi for a CACREP core course, group counseling.

CURRENT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Sarah Stewart-Spencer graduated with her Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology and Sociology in 2004 from Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida.  She is also a 2006 graduate of Regent University’s Master’s of Arts in Community Counseling. While attending Regent for her master’s degree, Dr. Stewart-Spencer was the first student to ever receive a research assistantship. She was also awarded the Outstanding Student Award of Excellence, Collegiate All-American Scholar Award, and Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. She received her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision in 2010 from Regent University. Dr. Stewart-Spencer served as a teaching and research assistant during her doctoral endeavors. Her dissertation study compared masters counseling students in programs accredited by Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and non-accredited programs regarding educational standards influence on the student’s knowledge of indirect trauma and their preparation to prevent, recognize or combat symptoms of indirect trauma. She is currently a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida, and Nationally Board Certified.  Dr. Stewart-Spencer has worked in a variety of mental health capacities, including psychiatric inpatient treatment, community mental health as an emergency services clinician, program consultation, psychological assessments, and a crisis clinician in the Emergency Department at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. She recently served asthe Clinical Director of James Bentley Treatment Program, which offers intensive in-home and therapeutic day treatment for at-risk adolescents. She also recently served Norfolk General District Court system with independent examining for detainment hearings regarding psychiatric inpatient hospitalization. She has presented at a local, regional, state, and national level, as well as, been published in the International Journal of Behavioral Consultation and Therapy. From 2011 to 2012, she served as the Secretary of the Virginia Clinical Counselors Alliance. In October 2012, she was recognized by Capella University with the Stephen Shank award.
